I talked to a woman for forty minutes. Jeremiah cooked very good meat and his wife brought some to me. This Island is very small but really beautiful and people around and some musicians and singers near the ocean played guitar and sang songs. I took photos and recorded their songs, after lunch all the men met together for Arlen. All the men talked to Arlen about their experiences and how to be a good person and have a good future. Arlen is fifteen years old. But he wanted to be adult, a man. We had 21 men. Arlen didn’t eat food for three days. So when we were talking he ate some dessert and all the people handed around that food. Forty minutes later all the men swam, Women meeting for Ellen and Marta in the teepee, they talked about their experiences for Ellen and Marta. Sounds like education. My wife’s body was really warm.Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-28739164198319722032009-07-16T18:25:00.000-07:002009-07-16T18:48:13.089-07:00June 20th, 2009 Second day of Solstice.
Today was the second day of solstice, June 20th. When was eating breakfast Jeremiah and some people arrived on our Island. I practiced drumming for three hours because I didn’t practice drum before. I worried about when we play drums at night and I was worried I would make a mistake. C.B. made two Sandwiches for us. After lunch I continued to practice drumming and I saw a lot of seals. The weather was very good. In the afternoon we worked a little for solstice to pick up fire wood and made the teepee and put the solstice flag in the tree and we made a big circle and new people who came introduced themselves. Then we ate all the food together and there were a lot and so many different foods. Because all the people arrived here today, the young girls hot-tubbed on the big boat and sometimes they swam. Tonight at 10:45 the moon change and we went to good place near the ocean and Shantparv brought some quartz and cedar to put on a little fire, then people were seated and faceed east for thirty minutes meditation and prayer for the moon. I don’t know what the people were thinking when we prayed to the moon. But I asked for blessing to Buddha and Dharma and Sangha prayer to moon, also I chanted some important Buddhist prayer to the moon and all the world tonight. At 11:20 pm we started to play drums and I didn’t make mistakes too much when I played with the drummers. I know I need more practice drumming. Women danced around the fire also sometimes they sang a lot of songs. People brought many instruments. We played really good music. I record their some songs. Not too late. People were tired and they mostly went to bed. C.B. went to bed, too. I still played with some drummers. But the sound was not to good. When I went to bed someone slept like a stone near our tent. He snored very loudly.
Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-18038775018636205252009-07-10T22:42:00.000-07:002009-07-10T23:37:03.022-07:00June19th, 2009 First day in Solstice. I woke up at 8:00, today is Friday and I won’t work. Because community people wanted go to an Island and pray during solstice. I thought we will leave at 11:30 but Gregg called us he said “we have to go, are you ready " then I ate breakfast very quickly and I brought a cup tea and drank in the truck. But I had no time to bring lunch. I went with gregg to the beach and put some stuff in Gregg’s boat. Paul Lewis said “Karjam we can go together in my boat” his boat is made of wood and very nice, Ellen and Marta went with Gregg. Other people used teacher Greg’s boat. That boat is big and very nice. Three boats went to a small Island together. We used a walkie-talkie and I took photos and recorded video. When we went to the small Island Gregg’s boat stopped and can’t start. Then we used teacher Greg’s boat to go to the small Island very slowly. But we still were first and nobody came there. People found good places near the ocean. I remember C.B. told me “Karjam you are first there so you choose a place near the ocean for our tent.” But I chose a bad place. After three hours some boats came. But C.B. didn’t come yet. I was very hungry. Gregg said before “Karjam here have some food if you want to eat” But I still chose to wait for our food and my wife. At 5:40 C.B. came in the last boat and she said “Honey are you hungry” yes I waited for you all day. Then we brought our stuffs went to our place she was not happy we weren’t near the ocean. After we ate some food we made our tent. At night we made a fire and talked to together. But the wind was very strong and many people went to bed, we went to bed, too. Near the ocean tents were unhappy because the wind was still very strong also our neighbors. My wife said “Honey I understand why you chose this place” there was not a lot of wind. And she talked about her parent’s story. I really liked to listen and I said “then and then” and she slept.Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-81115245028912952862009-07-08T09:55:00.000-07:002009-07-08T10:27:37.924-07:00June 16th, 2009 My Early Birthday Party and Motorcycle.
Today was June 16th, 2009, Tuesday and I had my birthday party. My real birthday is June 23rd, but Cedar Bough (my wife) she will go back to LA on June 23rd, so family we thought June 16th is a good time everyone. Not too busy. Yesterday C.B. asked me “honey who is your best friend” I said “you are my best friend” she said “no not me I mean or other people on Lopez” I know why she asked me that. I really want someone to come to my birthday party. But I know Tuesday everyone was very busy. So I said I don’t have any friends on Lopez. Irene V called me she asked “Karjam what do you like for your birthday dessert I will make it for you. I said “I know all the desserts you make are good so I can’t choose.” Tuesday morning at 7:30 I went to work thirty minutes way. When I went to work my motorcycle stopped and it wouldn’t start. I am very angry because I paid $600.00 to the mechanic Alwen. I didn’t ride yet for five days and my motorcycle has the same problem as before. I finished work at 4:50 and then I came home. C.B. said “Nigel and Juniper and their father came to your birthday party. I am happy she invited my younger friend Nigel. Afternoon the party started at Zack & Irene’s home. Also Zack made a fire outside. C.B. and her family made good food. Then the family came and they gave me different presents and gave me hugs and say happy birthday and the kids also too, they were very lovely. After we ate food Juniper brought a big dessert on the top there were a lot of candles and the family sang the birthday song for me and C.B. kissed me she said “honey I bought two clothes for you and love you so much” then we ate and talked and the kids played with the dogs but I worried about my motorcycle maybe tomorrow I can’t go to work on my motorcycle. I still thought about the mechanic Alwen. What he would do to fix my motorcycle. This is my second birthday party in the U.S.A. I never had a birthday party in Tibet.
Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-24762386436295418272009-07-08T09:20:00.000-07:002009-07-08T09:53:42.573-07:00June 10th, 2009 Junipers Concert at Lopez School and Uma and Sirus.Today is Wednesday and Juniper had a concert at school. I ate dinner with Juniper’s parents yesterday. I saw Juniper practiced music and she has two different flutes and she showed me how to play that flute. Then she said “tomorrow I will have a concert in school” when I was talking to her. She was very different from last year. I understood because her parents and Edi, they use a lot time for her education. At 10:30 I went to school to Juniper’s concert, the concert was in the school music room. There were not a lot people. Mostly kids parents and some another young kids came there. Juniper played music with Uma . Music teacher Lisa she told them the music tempo and tone and sometimes they played with another two kids. They are very young 6 years old. But they are understood how to play flute. They played very good. After the concert some people asked some kids “why do you want to study flute and how was the your concert and did you make a mistake?” people waited for their answer and gave many times for kids. Then a woman gave to teacher Lisa big flowers. I took some photos of Sirus and other kids. I talked to Sirus a little and he can sing my song. I saw in the music room a lot of different instruments. I am really happy Juniper likes to play some instruments. Also I am really happy her parents and grandpa and grandma. They came to support to her. I am surprised, because she is six years old and that concert was only thirty minutes. But people thought that is important we have to go see her concert. Wow. I remember when I was young my education. Not good, anyway. Here I saw their maney different education of three years. I thought I can’t live in the U.S.A. I must go to Tibet and I will work for some school.Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-63701393189944664092009-07-05T14:56:00.000-07:002009-07-05T15:01:55.664-07:00June 08th, 2009 I went to Seattle and Lopez Island.I woke up at 6:00 am, Cedar Bough helped me carry my stuff. We went to LAX airport mostly with many very heavy books. Also I had my instrument, a Bouzouki, it is very big. In the airport many people asked me “is that a banjo” I said “No this is Karley, my bouzouki but next year I will want to buy a banjo and I like banjo” They said “yes banjos sound very good” at 8:20 I flew to Seattle and all the seats were full. I arrived in Seattle at 11:30 and I ate a good lunch at the airport. At 12:20 I got to the shuttle bus and Maya Borhani got the bus, too. On the bus we talked all the way. She went to many plans with her group performance for around ten days. After two hours we got to the ferry and went to Lopez Island. My mother-in-law (Edi) waited for me at the ferry landing. Maya’s daughter came to the ferry landing. Then we went to the market and I bought a lot of food and when we went home Edi asked me about my family in Tibet and she said “Supper at 7:00pm.” After I cleaned my small house I went to Edi’s home and ate dinner together. She made very good food and a little dessert she said “Gregg and Irene went to Seattle they will come back tomorrow” after dinner Zack and Irene and their daughter Juniper came to my house to hug me and say hello. They said “Karjam we want to have dinner tomorrow night at our home together” Then I went to Irene Skyriver’s garden. Gregg made a new gate and the garden changed a lot. Wow Lopez here is really good all the way are green and quiet and I can listen to bird songsKarjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-1752612597042655482009-06-15T19:42:00.000-07:002009-06-15T19:48:37.622-07:00June 7th, 2009 Professor Judys Party.
After at 5:00 we went to Professor Judy’s home for a party for the Indonesian teachers. A lot of people came to the party. But I know most of them. I talked to some friends and took a lot of photos and recorded video. There was a lot of food and different drinks and desserts because Judy invited two cooks. First Judy spoke about this program being successful she said “Thank you for the Indonesian teachers” then some teachers spoke about this class and all the teachers cried. But Sunardi didn’t cry and he still recorded video. Judy invited some professional dancers and drummers. After dinner some people played instruments and other people danced together. Philip played guitar and the teachers sang Indonesian songs. Judy had all the Indonesian instruments, a room full. Then Judy gave the teachers her presents and teachers gave Judy and her assistants presents. Also everyone brought a present for the Indonesian teachers. So they opened the presents and said “who gave this?” somebody said “That was what I gave” then they hugged and kissed on their face. It looked like Christmas presents, very funny
Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-82679757593527647082009-06-13T23:23:00.000-07:002009-06-13T23:40:29.587-07:00June 5th,2009 Professor Helen Rees and Musician Eunjung Cho.In the afternoon professor Helen Rees gave a speech in the UCLA music building, I was a little late. There were some professors and some Ph.D. students there. I didn’t understand her speech very well. But I looked at her book and listened to the CD before. I heared many students wanted to listen to her speech. After her speech I talked with her about some of my ideas and how to save to traditional music and instruments. She told me some her ideas and she showed me a book. She said “ you need to buy this book” C.B. said “we already have that book.” Kate checked my blog she was surprised and she said “ Karjam you are doing really good and I like it” At 6:30 C.B. and I got the bus and went to a school and met Eunjung Cho and her two boys. She taught gayageum. Then we went to a good Korean restaurant. After we ate there was still a lot of meat. Eunjung said “Karjam that meat is all for you” But I really can’t eat more, I am full. Eunjung drove us home.Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-17293521088946622792009-06-13T09:51:00.000-07:002009-06-13T10:08:05.349-07:00May 26th,2009 Familly visit us. In the afternoon Irene and Juniper came to LA to visit us. They are from Lopez Island and they are our family. Also Irene's brother Frank and his two daughters Gracie and Gabriella. They wanted to visit us. Frank said "Gabriella wanted to visit Karjam" Riella likes me and she thinks I'm special. At 2:30 we met at UCLA and C.B. showed them her building and we watched some students dancing. Also we went to the music building and C.B. showed the instruments to the
girls. I met professor Helen Rees and her friend. We talked for five minutes and professor said " she is my good friend's daughter and also he is my teacher in China" Then we went to a good restaurant and ate lunch. Some studen'ts asked professor Wenten " How did you and your wife meet for the first
time" professor told their his story and I sang two songs and danced one short dance.Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-6541694095504266052009-06-04T21:49:00.000-07:002009-06-04T23:14:32.991-07:00May 24th, 2009 Old Topangga Canyon.
In the morning Karen came to our parking lot. She got us. We went to professor Buswell's house. One hour away. It was very beautifull and looks like an actor lives there. That house was on the mountain. We can see all the houses and some village below us. Some studants and professors brought a lot of food. Professor Buswell cooked meat. On that very beautiful land we ate lunch

very slowly. People talked so much. Also I talked to some professors we used Chinese, they teach Buddhism at UCLA. The weather was very good. After lunch everyone went hiking and professor Buswell's wife Christina lent us seven hats. She said "if you want use please get" then I got one hat, Christina said "that hat we bought in Tibet in 2005." Wow, I was surprised. When we were hiking Christina talked to me about her trip to Tibet. She really liked Tibet. She wants to travel to Tibet again. We took photos all together and then we came back. Buswell brought two big watermelons. That were very cold so everyone was happy to eat them. At 4:00 pm. We came back to the city.

Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-62567046409960523302009-06-04T19:43:00.000-07:002009-06-04T21:39:34.161-07:00May 23rd, 2009 Buddhism Event offers ceremony.Cedar Bough wanted do some thing at home. I went to a buddhism ceremony at UCLA in Kerckhoff Grand salon. A lot of people came there and some monks talked a little about Buddhism. Because today is Buddha's birth day. We washed the Buddha's face and made three Groups and talked with each other. Monks from Sri Lanka and China and Korea. They had a little food for lunch. No meat. After lunch there were some performances also Tibetan dance. That dance is not good and the dancers were just Chinese students. But I'm very happy they are dancing. I met the famous photagrapher Don Farber and his Tibetan wife Yeshi. We talked alittle bit. Don Farber had a lot of photography books and people bought some of his books. When I went to UCLA I met a woman. Her name is Radka and I think she understands me. She helped me show some things
and we talked very slowly. I falt that was very different Buddhist ceremony.Karjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16900260384183108828noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4473482144935908146.post-41491554768162699262009-05-29T14:25:00.000-07:002009-05-29T16:04:37.763-07:00May 21th,09 Maya's Speech and From Gujarat,India concert. Some studants didn't learn music before. But today they played very well. I was surprised. After class I asked some studants."Did you study music before?" most students started to learn music in middle school.

At 12:00 I listened to Maya's speech with C.B. also there was some food. We ate lunch there. Maya's speech was about Buddhism and she is from Germany but she researches Korean Buddhism. some people and professors asked Maya questions. I asked Cedar Bough " Do you have some question for Maya" she said "No" I thought she was. Because she also research Korean Buddhism ten years ago. In the afternoon there was a concert at the Fowler Museum. LA Electric 8 play music and everyone watched some video of Cari Ann's. There was some food and drink. But people can't take photos or make video recordings. After the concert. We went to another concert in the music building. SidiGoma is from Gujara, India. Their performenc was very good. When I watched their performence. I think traditional things are the bast. When we went in to the room people respected their culture by taking off their shoos. They really want to understand the Tibetan culture and environment. So I thought C.Bs. speech went viry well. Then in the Department of world Art and cultures there was a speech. A bout the Philippines by Lorenzo. I listened of that speech. He spoke a bout dance in the prison. A lot of prisoners danced Michael Jackson's dance.
